“CLICK IT OR TICKET” NETS 8,842 OCCUPANT PROTECTION CHARGES
40,992 total traffic and criminal violations during first two-weeks of campaign
RALEIGH—More than 8,800 drivers and passengers were cited for safety belt and child passenger safety violations during the second week of the spring “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which ran from Monday, May 30 – Sunday, June 5. Law enforcement officers across the state held 3,738 checkpoints and saturation patrols in a one-week period.
“Given these numbers, I think it’s accurate to say that law enforcement is delivering a strong safety message to motorists during this campaign,” said Darrell Jernigan, Director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Program. “It is our hope that all drivers and passengers will continue to buckle up and officers will continue to be on watch for violators.”
Mecklenburg County, for the second week, leads with the highest number of safety belt citations for the week with a total of 917 violations. Wake (668), Robeson (356) and Caldwell (334) counties followed with elevated violations during the week.
Besides cracking down on safety belt and child passenger safety violators, officers state-wide charged 1,141 motorists with DWIs, issued 10,706 speeding tickets and discovered 709 drug charges, 51 stolen vehicles and 12 fugitives from justice.
The spring “Click It or Ticket” campaign began on Monday, May 23 and ended on Sunday, June 12. Final numbers will be released later this week.
