CARY LAUNCHES HEALTHY NEIGHBORHOODS INITIATIVE
*
CARY, NC – At an open house this evening, Cary citizens will get their first look at the Town of Cary’s new Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative – a proactive, multi-pronged effort to ensure that every person in Cary has the opportunity to live in a place that meets our state’s and community’s basic standards for healthy living.*Some of the issues to be addressed by this new coordinated effort include:

-*Broken windows and holes in roofs or walls
- Inoperable, inadequate, or unsafe plumbing, heating and electrical systems
- Rotted stairs, porches, and railings
- Abandoned structures and junk vehicles
- Garbage and graffiti
*
“Whether you own or live in a Cary apartment, townhouse, mobile home, duplex, or single family residence, the Town believes that everyone has the same rights to – and responsibilities for – a home that’s safe, healthy, and attractive,” said project coordinator Lana Hygh.*“We hope that residents and property owners in our Town Center focus area will come by to learn about the program and tell us how we can help their neighborhoods stay healthy.”

The underlying philosophy of Cary’s Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative is the belief that most citizens want to do the right thing, for themselves and their neighbors.* Often when properties begin to deteriorate, it is because a property owner or resident has fallen on hard times, is sick, or simply needs another pair of hands to make things right again.* And sometimes it is a matter of not knowing what state and community codes and laws require.* With this in mind, Cary’s Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative begins with education and includes many avenues for assistance.* Exercising enforcement actions is seen only as a last resort.
*
The open house will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center on the Town Hall Campus.* Citizens can drop by anytime to meet and talk with the Healthy Neighborhoods team, which includes staff from Police, Solid Waste, Minimum Housing, Affordable Housing, Code Enforcement, and the Town Manager’s Office.*
