View Full Version : Hey, I know those guys!
If any of you missed the ABC news tonight, you missed some incredible journalism. Brent, Hyatt, Laurie, and Jeff UJlma from the TOC were all on TV discussing the accidental clearing of the Buffaloe tract. Way to go guys!
oops, meant to post this in CP People in the news, not CP News. It's late.

It's never too late when you have the power!
BTW - the only 'incredible' journalism was that they managed to pare my carefully prepared and expertly delivered 10 minute speech down to 8 seconds :D

I tried very hard to stay behind the camera. We had no idea we were being filmed walking away.

Yeah, me too. I guess we know we're not star material when most of the report consists of tree stumps.
I like how she ended the report with "We'll keep you updated on...THE CARY CONTROVERSY" (was that haunting organ music I heard in the background? )

The perfect commercial:
We have Brent and a bunch of Boy Scouts looking at all the cut down trees, they turn slowly to face the camera. Each one has tears in their eyes. One of the boys asks Brent "Scoutmaster Brent, I thought Smokey the Bear was suppose to protect the forest? "So did I" replies Brent. Fade to black.
Wuptdo B-)
I e-mailed Channel 14 with the details as well, along with this web site as a reference, I guess they blew it off

Wuptdo, I like it. But just before the fade to black, how about I say, "Oh, by the way, boys, your share of this new mud field comes to about $1 each." The boys pay $1 each, with long faces. :(
Now Brent, you wouldn't be making fun of a certain politician that always tries to blow off big ticket items by breaking the numbers down to a "per resident" amount now would you?

There is a big difference between the online ABC11 news story and the one that aired April 5.
http://abclocal.go.com/wtvd/news/040504_NW_carytrees.html
Online it says: Some folks in Cary are calling for the destruction of a Lowe's that's not even built yet. That's because a store official admits to cutting down trees that were supposed to stay put!
On air it said: Tonight some people in Cary are seeing red over the destruction of city green. That's because a subcontractor building a new Lowe's cut down the trees that were supposed to have stayed put.
I think this is quite a difference. I don't know anyone who is calling for the destruction of Lowe's, certainly not those interviewed for this story. And who claimed to be speaking for the majority of Cary residents? Nobody that I know of.

Certainly not me, and I am not aware of anyone else who is.

Nobody that I know of, either.
When I read the on-line version, I thought that part sounded different. Thanks!

Certainly not.
By the way, your share of the public art at Town Hall is about four bucks. But I think you can join the "family payment plan" and get a discount.
Can I put a frantz automotive logo on it?

There we go, corporate sponsorship of the, as JohnB calls it, "moose drool". For $4,000, you can buy your own "Gate of Light". Then they could work a deal so that for every additional $100, you can add one foot of height to your "Gate". That way, if one of your competitors buys a "Gate", you just pay another $1,000 to make your "Gate" 10 feet taller.

Here is a transcript of the story as it aired. A little different from what is online -
Intro from studio: Tonight some people in Cary are seeing red over the destruction of city green. That's because a sub contractor building a new Lowe's cut down the trees that were supposed to have stayed put. The trees would have provided a buffer between the Lowe's goint up at Maynard, Chapel Hill and Evans Roads and a popular city park. Eyewitness News anchor Katina Rankin picks up the story from there.
Katina Rankin: These Cary residents say they are few in number but they speak for the majority of the town. They're outraged over losing these 50 year old trees that sit on 2 acres of land by the skate board park on NW Maynard.
Don Hyatt: We're all quite upset that public land was inadvertantly cleared and we're looking to get it fixed.
Katina Rankin: At issue, according to Cary resident Brent Miller, is this - A Lowe's Home Improvement store will soon sit on this corner. The town bought this two acre tract next to the site for $100,000 to serve as a buffer between the store and the park. But somehow subcontractors cleared the land in the buffer zone by mistake.
Brent Miller: We're really upset about the buffer not being able to function as a buffer since we paid for it with our tax dollars.
Katina Rankin: Town officials tell us that they have been talking with the subcontractors and they're working on a couple of solutions.
Jeff Ulma: Everything ranging from citations and fines for land disturbance to revegetation and then to what degree. Clearly this was a mature area that you wouldn't want to replant with small seedlings or anything. And so we've just got to put together kind of a plan of attack a strategy for how to best deal with it.
Katina Rankin: Town officials will continue to discuss options. And this evening, surveyors were at the site getting a new lay of the land. We'll keep you posted on the Cary controversy. In Cary, Katina Rankin, ABC11 Eyewitness News.

Way to go Jeff!!! Thanks for demonstrating my earlier point. :)
