State Representative Jennifer Weiss was the guest speaker at the most recent Western Wake Democrats meeting. She did a GREAT job... and we hope she keeps up her great work at the Capital. :-D

Is that "at the Capital (City), i.e. Raleigh" or "at the Capitol, i.e. the building where the legislature works"? ;-)

No Don, the legislature has its own building (on Jones Street). It is the one with the gardens on top. They have an office building next door.

The govenor does have an office in the capitol building.

Congratulations! You win! (nothing more than my admiration but that should count for something :-) )

What exactly has Rep. Weiss done that is good? Good for whom; welfare queens, illegal aliens, people on death row, or hard-working, under payed taxpayers, wondering how their tax dollars are being used (or wasted). What has she done at all, beside eat free lunches. I would like to know what she has done to make my life better in Cary. How has she voted on major issues? Does she ever answer her e-mail? How come she won't come out in a public forum and "meet the people" (sorry, MattD, WWD is not the "people")?

Due to lack of "press" coverage of her, I assume she is doing nothing (but staying under the radar).

Curious minds want to know! :D

Wup,

She always answers my emails to her, and she does follow up on the issues I bring to her attention.

I can't say I agree with all of her voting record though.

Representative Weiss has always been pleasant and personable any time I've talked with her. She's always answered my emails, she takes my phone calls and she has historically done a very good job of promoting Cary's interests at the legislature. I'm certain we disagree on many national issues but I can honestly say she's someone I'd enjoy having lunch with. I can't say that about all the elected officials I know.

You can partially answer Wup's question by going to the NCGA web site of any senator or representative and looking under introduced bills. Rep. Weiss has been an industrious lady. She is particularly active in the area of
controlling illicit drugs, discouraging smoking by teenagers, health care and a wide variety of family matters.

On the web site, the bills for which that member is the prime sponsor will be shown in bold type.

Wup,

She always answers my emails to her, and she does follow up on the issues I bring to her attention.

I can't say I agree with all of her voting record though.

Cathy

Yes, she is responsive and works hard.

Wish she would support the continuation of the NCSSM tuition grant, as many people have asked her to do.

I Would be happy if all the Wake County Reps did this:

Voted against funding illegal aliens in our state colleges
Voted for a Lottery
Vote for Cigarette Tax increase (the more the better)
Vote Against extending "emergency" sales tax
Vote to let Char-Meck School District de-consolidate
Vote to lower business tax rate
Vote to allow "multi's" to charge "impact fees" for all infrastructure expenses
Vote to shift much needed highway money back to our "growing" distrct
Vote to reduce funding for Gov. Weasley's "More at Four" Program
Vote against any funding per the Lenardo Case

there are probably many others, but this is a start!

Wup,

FYI, Rep. Weiss has been the leader in the NC House to raise cigartette taxes. If I recall correctly she has proposed $0.75/pack.

This makes no sense Wup. The higher the tax gets, the less who smoke - it's revenue nuetral. Why only a tax on a certain group of people? because you don't smoke?

Vote to let Char-Meck School District de-consolidate

and lets not forget about Wake County

Vote to lower business tax rate

unlike Cary just did with license fees right?

Vote to reduce funding for Gov. Weasley's "More at Four" Program

ya, and make him reinburse Hendrick Motorsports for all the race cars he has crashed too.

Over 400,000 people die every year from cancer or heart attacks attributable to smoking. There are hard statistics that show that higher prices discourage teen agers from getting hooked in the first place.
Isn't that a good enough reason? Add to that the fact that NC has the lowest state tax rate on cigarettes in the nation.

It will stop kids (some), and next to fat people, and HIV/AIDS, smoking related illness is number 2 on the State medicade cost list. It they stop funding all the medicade/medicare stuff for smokers, than I am fine to leave the tax where it is at.

It is a step in the right direction, the first domino to fall, and we will be next, hopefully.

And Raleigh too! NC is second in the State of overall Corporate Tax Rate. Hopefully, lowering this rate, as well as lowering taxes on folks that run/make up these small companies, might actually create jobs! Yeah, Don, no argument from me about the "screwing" over business on license fee - just plain BS. It is like we have a bunch of "Tax & Spend" democrats running the show at city hall. However, I haven't heard a beep out of the COC on issue. What's the deal; or is the COC still suffering from in-fighting?

Ditto! I wonder why he didn't take Richard Petty's Race Driving School Course? I would hate to see what he would do at Hendrick's Land Rover Course behind the dealership in Cary! 8O

I find it interesting that at the moment we have a majority of borrow & spend Republicans. Although they will get around to raising taxes next year. I wonder who they will blame then?

Oops, folks this is supposed to be "Compliments" to elected officials. As usual, we've strayed off topic.

Not that it's not all good, just in the wrong topic. :-D

Maybe Hyatt will move it for us? B-)

Yeah Stan,

Trotting out your heartfelt concern for other peoples health and how it might impact 'someone else' makes acting like a fascist acceptable?

Maybe we should start filing lawsuits against neighbors who use lawn chemicals because they might be unhealthy for ME, and it might kill the little birdies that I love. Someone needs to put the hammer down on these irresponsible fools who have to have a perfect weed free lawn.

Maybe we should ban LAWNS! They are energy intensive, ecologically unsound AND contribute far more to pollution with all those lawnmowers running than they ever give back as a member of the plant community.
Yeah_that's the ticket.

Good one, Brent. We can always count on you to "look outside the box" for new ideas/labels.

Beside what Stan pointed out, there is another reason to support a higher Cigarette Tax in North Carolina. If we tax cigarettes at an average rate of most other states, then the "black market" for NC smokes will degress, thus denying funding for organized crime/terriorist. A friend of my from up North sent me an article last year about the largest "bust" of illegal cigarettes in Rhode Island, they were all from NC. 8O

Cathy - FYI, except for a few weeds that popped up while I was gone, I have one of those perfect lawns; without a lawn service (DIY).
