We all deal with a lot of unpleasant things on this planet and in this community. Perhaps it would be nice if the ills of war, hunger, poverty, crime and the many unpleasant things we all tend to complain about weren't so often on our minds.
But we all have a whole lot to be thankful for. This Thursday is a time set aside for this nation to do just that. I wanted to wish the Cary Politics crowd -- all of you -- a very happy Thanksgiving and encourage everyone to take a few moments to truly give thanks during this holiday.
I'm thankful for the right to free speech that makes this online community so interesting. I'm thankful for a wonderful family and the opportunity to live in a fine community. The full list couldn't be completed; it really is a never-ending endeavor to count one's blessings.
But when we complain about the things we don't like, let's give thanks for the right to free speech and remember how many people don't have that.
When we sit down to our Thanksgiving feast, let's give thanks for the bounty of food and remember those who don't have that.
When we get irritated with other people, let's give thanks for our family and friends and wonderful human diversity and remember people who are lonely and oppressed.
When we grumble about raking the leaves, mowing the lawn and cleaning the house, let's give thanks for our home and remember people who don't have that.
Yes, let's give thanks. Please especially remember our armed forces personnel, the victims of hurricanes and other natural disasters and our public safety workers and others who work to keep us free and safe every day and form the front lines for helping others when they need it.
Call this hokey or corny if you like, but it's sincere and I felt compelled to write it. I'm thankful that I could.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
