CARY SET TO MAKE HISTORY AT OPENING OF REGION’S FIRST BIOSOLIDS DRYER
WHAT: Official “switch on” and inside tour of Triangle’s first biosolids dryer that turns sludge into fertilizer
WHEN: Tuesday, November 29, 2005
11 a.m.
WHERE: South Cary Water Reclamation Facility
4900 West Lake Rd.
WHO: Rep. David Price will join Mayor Ernie McAlister and other state and local officials to officially “pull the lever” that will open the region’s first giant biosolids dryer – an economical, efficient and effective solution in the treatment of solid waste.
BACKGROUND:
On March 22, 2004, the Town of Cary broke ground on the $12.4 million state-of-the-art technology that turns the residue from sewage treatment into high-quality fertilizer. The facility will handle up to 250,000 gallons of sludge a day, which could yield about 50,000 pounds of environmentally-safe fertilizer per day. The dryer was made possible in part by a $1.35 million federal grant secured by Rep. Price.
MEDIA NOTE:
Following the ceremony, tours will be given of the new facility. In case of rain, the event will be held inside the dryer facility.
DIRECTIONS:
Travel U.S. 1 South to Cary Parkway exit. Turn left on Cary Parkway to right on Holly Springs Road. Next, turn left on Ten-Ten Road, then right on West Lake Road. The facility is at the end of West Lake Road. Media should park in designated spaces next to the facility. Staff will be on hand to assist with parking.
