I just heard we're now the 3rd safest city?

The faux military uniforms are too funny.
Especially with the tacky sunglasses.

John, John, John
They are simply there to serve and protect the likes of me from the likes of you. Our police department is really filled with decent folks. Im not so sure the same applies to the Durham or Raleigh folks.

John,
Geez you are really negative sometimes. 8O
Would you expect Cary's ERT to respond in Hawaiian Shirts and Cargo shorts?
You may also be surprised to know that Cary PD is functioning understaffed lately due to all the officers serving over in Iraq.

Don,
I overheard a conversation recently among a group of teenaged boys. They were talking about military weapons and deer hunting. One suggested they use a particular weapon system to bring down a buck. Another astutely observed that when on full auto a burst of .50 calibre fire would leave little if anything left of the deer to actually cook. I popped in and asked how they knew that...the response? "I know all about the military, I play Delta Force all the time!"
Cary's finest give off a similar impression. The mean streets of Cary hardly necessitate jump boots and imitation BDU's. Seeing that the Cary PD has automatic weapons is probably one of the more disconcerting bits of trivia I've come across it a while. I just hope they don't move the selector switch on their toys off Safe when not on the firing range. A flashlight and a .38 are probably more of testosterone rush than most of them could safely tolerate.

Actually John, the swat team is often used in Drug Raids. In the first 2 months they responded to 5 other situations, two of which included men who had barricaded themselves into their houses, one with his son. Unfortunatley they are a necessary evil in a town of our size. The difference between ours and Raleigh and Durhams is thatour team is part time as opposed to full time.

Knowing our Police department is ready "IF" a situation arises in Cary is comforting to me. These officers are VERY well trained. Since Cary's ERT is voluntary and only a "part time team", They are also ONLY paid 4 extra hours a pay period to be on the ERT. Most of their training is done on their own time. Would you rather Cary not have an ERT and have to rely on Raleigh or Durham's units?
On Average Cary's ERT responds to 14 "situations" a year and helps other departments as well. Durham averages 260 "situations" a year. Think Durham's unit would be available if we needed them?
Comparing the Cary PD's ERT with comments made by foolish teenagers is hardly comparing apples to apples. These officers put their lives on the line every day for US. Treat them with some respect. As far as I'm concerned, They've earned it.

On a more serious note, I agree with the observations of Don & Kelly. They have now experienced first hand a lot of what the CPD deals with.
I think we have a first-rate PD in Cary, and I'm thankful for that.

For my mid-life drive, I want a Pearl White Cadillac Escalade EXT, with high end Dubs (and optional .50 machine gun with auto fire & tracking  ) or I will settle for the new Hummer H3 with the same features. One can only dream!

JohnB,
The Escalade I want is the EXT version, i.e., pick-up truck version. The new H3 is also a pickup as well. Would of also listed a Lincoln Blackwood but they have discontinued. Would also have it special made to have the diesel version as well  ! Hopefully, those folks at Mercedes will finally listen to my advise and modify the 800 series into a pick-up truck as well  .
Oh lord, why don't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz,......

Hybrids Don't Always Deliver Low Mileage
May 12, 2004
Purchasers of hybrid cars are learning a bitter lesson -- those sky-high mileage estimates contain a lot of blue sky. Instead of getting 45 or more miles per gallon in city driving, many hybrid drivers say they're lucky to get better than 30 mpg.
While Toyota Prius and Honda Insight owners understandably blame the manufacturer for overstating mileage claims, experts say the blame really lies with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its 19-year-old fuel efficiency test.
Consumer Reports has found that hybrid cars get less than 60 percent of EPA estimates while navigating city streets -- the Civic Hybrid averaging 26 mpg in the city, the Toyota Prius 35 mpg, much less than their respective EPA estimates of 47 and 60 mpg. Highway mileage is typically closer to EPA estimates.
A big part of the problem is that the 19-year-old EPA tests use vehicle emissions to derive an estimated fuel-efficiency rating. Since the hybrids produce very low emissions, the test doesn't measure their real-world fuel consumption accurately.
Turbodiesels, now quite popular in Europe, may be a better answer for those seeking better mileage, although very few models are currently available in the U.S. and diesel fuel can be hard to find and expensive.
The most gas efficient fuel-only car on the U.S. market today is the VW Jetta Diesel Turbo. It gets 45 miles to the gallon, but consumers in California and four other states can't buy it yet because it doesn't meet clean-air requirements for particulate emissions.
That may change within the next few years, however. Diesel fuel sold in the U.S. will be required to have a lower sulfur content and thus burn "cleaner" beginning in 2006.
Turbodiesels have a huge market share in most of Europe. Nearly one-third of the cars sold in the U.K. are diesel. Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Peugeot, Citroen, Alfa Romeo, Volkswagen and all other major brands feature diesels in nearly every model segment.
Dubs...intriguing thought...hmm...
Okay, at the risk of looking like an idiot, which isn't too hard to do  , I'll ask anyway... What in the HECK are Dubs??? :?
Karen
Dubs are those HUGE wheels people put on cars/trucks/SUVs. My personal favorite, the LOWERED Hummer with 24 inch wheels. That makes sense.

Kelly,
You don't like the Studebaker XUV ??? Are you friggin' kidding me?
If you look closely you'll notice it bears a stricking resemblance to the old US Army duece and half trucks. Oddly enough, in Russia, because of US aid during WWII the word "Studebaker" is synonymous among older people for "truck". Many of the trucks built for the US Army and our allies were Studebakers. That's a proud name in US automobile history. They started off making wagons for the Army during the War between the States and stayed in business til 1966. It'll be nice to see the marque resurrected. I especially like this one:

Spinning "Dubs" is exactly what your Honda Odyssey needs. You would be the "baddest"(sp) Momma in da'hood with them Dubs! You would be the envy of all the mothers at the school and at the pool as well. But to go along with those Dubs, you need a a$$-kick'in 500 watt stero system, and lots of new "blink-blink!" :D
Don - Do you think a custom body shop would have a chance in the Cary market? Similar to what they do on "Pimp my Ride" on MTV or Monster Garage. Just kicking around some business ideas.

Hybrids Don't Always Deliver Low Mileage
FYI, My colleague at work here reports 40 mpg for her Honda Civic on average driving around the Triangle.
I know some Insight drivers who are pushing 60 mpg. How one drives (acceleration and stops) also affect efficiency.
In my Honda Element SUV, I get about 23 mpg driving around Cary.
