A revised Clean Air Recognition Awards proposal is on this week’s agenda under the Planning and Development Committee recommendations. If you think that this “free” program is something that would be better addressed by local businesses or the Chamber of Commerce, be sure to let the Town Council members know how you feel. Note that this program is not free. The proposed advertising budget is $28,000. Staff time spent on this is time not spent on other issues, so one has to consider that a cost as well.
I think that it is a bit off the mark that a governing board which “is prohibited by statute to enact regulations which would regulate the use of tobacco products” thinks that it is OK to spend our tax dollars to set up a program that encourages business to adopt non-smoking policies. I think it is an issue for the marketplace.
I am an ex-smoker and appreciate businesses that decide to become non-smoking establishments. It is, however, a decision for the business owner to make and my tax dollars do NOT need to be spent on encouraging them to become smoke free. The dollars that I spend in the marketplace help to determine those policies.
The cutting of the budget clearly shows that there are much higher priorities for the Council to address.
