The non-profit Friends of the Page-Walker Hotel is celebrating the grand re-opening of our gardens with a barbecue meal and concert on Saturday, May 20 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Page-Walker in downtown Cary.
Tickets for dinner (Cooper's BBQ) and the concert (Laura Ridgeway and Friends) are available at the Page-Walker or from any Friends board member (of which I'm one, so just use the "e-mail" button to contact me if you want tickets). Tickets are $25 individual, $40 couple and $65 for family of four.
OK, how is that a great buy? Sure, you can go to Mickey D's for cheaper food and some loud piped-in music. But with these tickets, you get a great meal and entertainment, but moreover, you're helping a good cause. Please support the Friends in our work of historic preservation and cultural/performing arts in Cary. Several CPers have already bought tickets, so thanks to you folks (and To Frantz Automotive, a business sponsor of the event). Would love to see others out there. Just e-mail me.
Thanks.

Yikes! Saturday May 20 it is (edited original to correct it).
Thanks Karen! (I had May 23 on the brain because that's another exciting Page-Walker event -- a historic preservation program called "What Have We Got to Lose?" that will be a video tour of historic properties in and around Cary. CPers should come to that, too...it's free! ).
Anyway, thanks, Karen, for pointing out my error.
And all the rest of you CPers: now you know that if you come, you'll not only get to see Don and Laurie and me, but also Karen!
Please, please, no pushing...form an orderly line...I have enough tickets for everyone.

Tonya et al,
A press release will be coming out shortly and there should be publicity in the form of e-mail, news stories, etc. In the meantime, pertinent info is:
Tuesday, May 23, 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Page-Walker in downtown Cary (next to Town Hall).
Free, open to all, light refreshments will be served.
A 1-hour video tour (slide show) of Cary's historic districts and other historic properties outside these districts. The motivation is to increase awareness of historic properties in and around Cary, including a few that have been lost, so as to help preserve history. We hope to present this program annually with updates (and so, before you ask, I don't think that the New Hill historic district will make it into this year's program...only because it's a monumental effort to put the program together for the first time...but I for one hope it will be there in the future).

Thanks, Brent. Who sponsors these events? (Sorry to ask so many questions, and if there is a source you'd rather direct me to, that would be great, too.)

My pleasure Tonya! No apologies necessary; I am happy to promote this organization (of which I recently became the vice president...which proves that they'll take ANYBODY! ).
Sponsored by the Friends of the Page-Walker hotel, a non-profit organization. Originally formed to save the Page-Walker hotel (which is now beautifully restored and attracts tens of thousands of people per year to events), the group's expanded mission now includes historic preservation throughout Cary (one project we're now doing is placing National Register of Historic Places plaques on downtown historic properties), education (the Cary Heritage Museum is on the third floor of the Page-Walker, and this program series is another example) and cultural, visual and performing arts (there is almost always a visual art collection on display at the Page-Walker and we put on a concert series every year).
See http://www.friendsofpagewalker.org for more info.
Some of the info out there is stale or incomplete, but the newsletters are current and informative.

Oh, another thing, Tonya...
If you happen to know any schoolteachers  , one of the things that the Friends do is arrange school field trips to the Cary Heritage Museum at the Page-Walker (we can even help subsidize bus transportation) for students.
We've also just started a program where we visit classrooms and do fun, hands-on learning activities about local history.
If these interest you or someone you know (this goes for other CPers too), e-mail me and we'll get the right folks talking to each other to set something up.
