Tosca near downtown Durham is one of the most atmospheric restaurants in the Triangle. It is housed in an old tobacco warehouse near downtown. The spaciousness, very high ceilings, exposed wood beams, modern chandeliers and large posters and litho's show the hand of an experienced designer.

Part of the charm of Tosca is finding your way to the entrance. It is located in the middle of an apartment/office complex and our route took us through the apartment lobby and past an interesting gift and furniture shop. On the other side theres a pation with tables for outdoor dining.

It is among the top two or three restaurants in the Triangle for Northern Italian cuisine. Marcia and I rate restaurants by their bread - and Tosca was tops.

Wei Li, our waitress was a Dukie out of Shanghi on her way to the London School of Economics on a scholarship. The sevice was impeccable.

Obviously, none of this comes cheap. But if its a special occassion or someone else is buying dinner, give Tosca a try.

PS: Within an area of a few blocks there are a host of excellent restaurants. Pop's trattoria, Magnolia Grille, Vin Rouge, the Grasshopper, Champas Brazilian rodizio (BBQ), Tosca and Fowlers gourmet market for sandwiches and stuff for the pantry. The Bulls ball park is close by as is the Carolina theater and performance arts center. A few miles away are the best hamburgers in the state - Ted Turners...try the buffalo SOB burger...I could only eat half. Nana's, Four Square and several others complete my A list. (Despite going to all these places now and then, I've managed to lose 45 lbs. over the last six months.)

I believe the "anchor" for all of this is Duke, both the college and the medical centr. If someone on the CTC wanted to leave a mark on Cary a few decades from now what better project than the Triangle's next uiversity.
