Sometimes, the only way to fix something is to let it totally break. Durham is overrun with enablers and excuse makers. Case in point is the Nifong fiasco, but it is far, far deeper than just that. The crime statistics, the drug problems, the politics, and the financial mistakes, in conjunctio with the "do it because it feels good" philosophy prevalent in Durham will keep durham the backwater community to the Triangle, so long as these factors prevail. It will likely be getting worse before it gets better, as those who would like to make a difference are being driven off, and are giving (or have given) up. Durham is on course to become the Detroit of the south.

As for the NandO trashing Cary, Susan Moran will always be the Minister of Propaganda who can find a way to spin a convenient excuse for any and all offenses, and no matter how abusive and mistake ridden the policies of the Town Council, she will outscream those who object. This too is a bad direction, since there eventually comes a time when, like the emperors new clothes, the nudity becomes obvious.

In short, both communities are in trouble, but for very different reasons. Cary is a victim of its success and excesses, while Durham doesn't even recognize what success might look like.
