Joe is still fibbing about his voting record. http://wakewatch.blogspot.com/

He says he voted for Glen Lang...Which is odd since his voter registrations shows he didn't. If he voted for Glen Lang, he voted under someone else's name and broke the law. The guy keeps digging. Does he not think that anyone would verify what he is posting?

One of my friends sent this in an email to me:

Joe had it coming. Like so many people, he obviously was happily oblivious until something happened that affected him personally, then he gets all self righteous about it....

This guy is willing to damage the Town of Cary, because his failure to keep up with local politics and cast a vote. Unbelievable.

Kelly,

I'll have to agree with you only in part on this one. I think it's pretty obvious we have a complacent public in Cary, and I'e said it myself, that those who chose not to understand and to bury their heads in the sand get the government they allowed by their indifference. But i also have to question the right of the government to basically run people down in the crosswalk because they choose to direct their attention to other things. The government should never take on the role of predator, and the trust that government is afforded is based on them representing us, even when we aren't looking. We should not have to expect to be at every board meeting, and observe every vote, otherwise there would be no need for representation, we could all represent ourselves. I also still have that major beef, which you're well aware of, those of us who ARE concerned, and who stay involved, but are pushed out of the process, such that the government decisions made affect us deeply, but we are kept out of the voting process that affords us the real opportunity to be heard. I still maintain that those of us where I live are being governed, and taxed, by Cary, without representation. I already know your disagreements with me on this stand, so you may, of course restate your case to the contrary.

I think you are in a quagmire. Living right beside the ETJ border, and being impacted by it without the right to vote sucks. I think that needs to be changed. How you change it, whether it is a state job, a county job or a city job to do so I dont know. I dont think you have to watch every council meeting, I do however think (as you do) if you have never voted, you got what you deserve. It looks to me that we are on about the same page.

Its almost like you guys should have a vote in the at large races...but how you would work that out, I dont know. Maybe living in a planned annexation neighborhood gives you the power to vote?

Thanks for your thoughts and support Kelly, it seems we have the right to vote (the Constitution gave us that), but the Cary Town Council has the opportunity to deny us the voting provisions. There is probably a lawsuit waiting to be funded in all this somewhere, but when you're fighting a government that has so little regard, and infinite funding, one individual under the wheels of this machine doesn't even warrant examining the spot they leave. In the meantime, my property will be open as advertising space come election time to take the ones who deny me my rights to task for their efforts (and Holly Springs Rd gets PLENTY of traffic that will see my LARGE ads come election time). I too think it should allow us to vote, but I've been turned away at the voting booth more than once, being told by the poll workers that my voting precinct was not being given ballots, as we are not within the voting jurisdiction of the issues being voted upon. I had to watch them dig up my yard, while having been told to go home, that I couldn't vote on the issue. You're absolutely right, it sucks. I have no respect for those on this council who know this to be true, and continue to operate without our consent. The voting rights record in Iraq has shown itself to be better than that of Cary, I guess. If only I could believe that Cary citizens would get out and vote after they've read my ads, I'd at least feel better. I may be becoming the Holly Spring Rd version of the guy across from St Michaels on High House Rd very very shortly (to inlude the scheduled cannon firing).

One thing to add Daryl. I would have a problem with a random person showing up to vote at a poll, without already being on the voter rolls. I think the poll worker did the right thing by not giving you a ballot to vote, simply because you felt entitled to. I however think as society grows and people are more and more impacted in the UA's (Unincorporated Areas) we have to give them a voice at the table.

In My Opinion: A State of the Town rebuttal
Terry Thorne

Raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens, tra-la-la … Once again Mayor Ernie McAlister has presented a pastel-colored, peaches-and-cream overview of a Cary many citizens barely recognize.

Like “hizhonor,” most citizens have great optimism for the Town of Cary in 2007. Unfortunately for him this optimism is driven in part by the possibility of seeing a few new faces in the seats of Council currently occupied by McAlister and our outspoken council members representing Districts “B” and “D.” As for who will eventually hold Michael Joyce’s former at-large seat, we’ll probably have to wait until November to see. But we can only hope it will be someone more closely aligned with the concerns of grassroots Cary residents rather than the self-serving McAlister-Roseland-Dorrel triumvirate.

So what does make Cary a great community in which to live, work and raise a family? Granted, although not mentioned in the mayor’s address, a cybercrime task force to protect us from our own stupidity may be one future option, as would be the additional procurement of public art. But here are a few suggestions overlooked by McAlister we might want to focus on to enhance Cary’s quality of life right now.

For our children: Heading the list would be an educational career with minimal reassignment angst, and the enjoyment of a stable school experience among familiar friends, faculty and surroundings. To be sure, acres of parks to play in are nice, but so would be shorter bus rides to and from school. For parents and professionals: Let’s start with not having to worry endlessly about our children’s (or grandchildren’s) school (re)assignments, daily commutes or schedules, and safety; or the growing chasm between have and have-not neighborhoods. Safe neighborhoods are a Cary plus, but not all are. And what about that empty lot at the end of the street where garbage and mattresses and vermin and, oh well, you get the picture … . (An aside for Cary Elementary PTA members: How many empty tallboys and discarded baggies did you find in the buffer woods surrounding your playgrounds this week?) (more below)

Can anyone track down Terry Thorne and let him know he would be welcome here?

Terry Thorne was one of the applicants for the at-large seat vacated by Mike Joyce. His contact information is public record.

His column was good.

I wonder if there will be any follow-up columns?

Last week I sent a mea culpa letter which was printed in the Cary News regarding my voting record, but I stand by my Money Magazine campaign. Everything said about me being apathetic toward Cary Politics, until my family got hurt badly, is true. I'm stubborn and will keep doing what I believe will help return Cary to the wonderful place it once was to live.

Voter apathy (Mine included) helped give the CTC absolute power to do what they want. Every letter you send to the Cary News vilifying me for my voting record will only serve to silence the thousands of other citizens who have not exercised their right to vote.

Yo, Joe dude - Good LTE in the Cary News. Image what Cary would be like if 10,000 more voters/taxpayers really woke-up!

Nothing in politics would make me happier than to have 10 thousand more voters than in 2005 or 2003 show up to vote in municipal elections. How many people have died to give all of the right to vote? How many more in this world would love to have the opportunity. Its one of the truest blessings all of us have for being an American Citizen.

Totally agree, Kelly....so why then does this CTC STILL prevent me from voting, when I am now in their scheduled annexation plans????
