Cary Politics has learned that 2 term Cary councilor Nels Roseland will <strike>not</strike> be seeking re-election for his District 'B' seat citing improving work and family pressures, <strike>mostly wanting to spend more time with his two young children</strike> plus getting through the newborn sleepless nights. Nels' focus on Cary's budget and the environment <strike>will</strike> may not be missed after all.

Good for him, and even better for his kids. IMHO, those 0 to 7 years are the most important (and fun) in a child's life. Both parent and children should enjoy it. Because when they become teenagers,.............. :-x :-x :-x

Be interesting to see who now crawls out of the woodwork in this district.

I'm gathering from this that he's given up the prospect of running for Mayor as well... one usually doesn't cite "the pressures" if they plan to advance in the hierarchy. Seems only a short time ago that that was where he was headed. Any idea what got him to change his plans? Maybe knowing that, there are a few others who could be convinced to go the same route (mentioning no names here, but their initials are "Perky Princess")?

Hey Don F., here is your opening! :-D
When are you announcing?

Make sure to read the *very* carefully edited initial post in this thread. After speaking with Councilor Nels Roseland personally, it seems CP stands corrected and it was all a media stunt on somebody's part... (not mine of course, I would never do anything purposely designed to get information ahead of time)

We expect an email update from Nels later this evening :-)

The actual retraction was probably buried somewhere in a "RailHawks" ad, put out at the proper moment by our very own "Bugsy" (Minister of Propaganda) Moran.

Don't blame you - BUT... I did get a definitive answer earlier than anyone else :-)

Don, I would like to quell all the ugly horrific rumors and set the record straight that I will be running for re-election for the Cary District B seat. Stay tuned for the official announcement by next Monday.

All the best,

Nels C. Roseland

Funny how politicians will "announce" their intentions when the word get's out and picks up momentum that they're not a player any more! I doubt they even get that panicked when their Viagra runs out 8-O ----->

Nels' official campaign re-election notice...
<hr>
Dear Friends & Neighbors,

It's official! I am officially announcing my intention of running for re-election for the Cary Council District B seat. There is important unfinished business with respect to implementing our growth management, open space and downtown improvement plans that must stay on track. The quality of life we enjoy can be improved if we focus on four things:

· Responsible Growth ? First and foremost we need to make sure adequate roads, schools and water are in place when we approve new development. Growth can be good, but it must add value to existing residents and neighborhoods.

· Environmental Preservation ? Since 2000, Cary has invested over $42 million and has preserved over 2,251 acres of pristine land. As chief architect of Cary?s open space planning and land acquisition efforts, we have achieved a lot, yet we must do more.

· Public Safety ? Cary is the safest city in North Carolina and the southeast and we need to stay that way. Our police department must be provided the patrol, investigative and forensic resources they need to keep our families and neighborhoods safe.

· Fiscal Discipline ? Having worked in the public finance arena for over 15 years, I know how to address critical public needs while reducing waste and keeping taxes low. In 2008, Cary must reduce its property tax rate to eliminate the property revaluation increase, because Cary simply does not need the money.

What makes Cary great is our small town charm, family orientation; being clean and green and we need to stay that way. These are my core values. They are why I want to continue serving on the Cary Town Council.

Have a great 4th of July.

Nels

What's up with the one lonely tree on Nels' website??? The future of Cary??? 8O 8O For someone who promotes the aquisition of open space, it seems he'd have more than one tree on his site.

Karen, perhaps it is a metaphor representing Nel's, Ernie, and the current councils view on what they think Cary is. I believe you will find the answers in the children's (because all citizens in Cary are like children) book The Giving Tree (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Giving_Tree), by "Shel" Silverstein.

Karen, we the citizen's of Cary are the Tree, while the Mayor & council represent the Little Boy. Symbolism at its finest. If you don't have a copy, come over, and I will let you borrow mine.

But sometimes, a train is a train and a tunnel is just a tunnel.

Wupt - I LOVED that book as a kid (and Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends). About a year ago bought The Giving Tree for Grant. Reading it thru the eyes of an adult, I nearly had to hold back tears at the end...

See, I'm not one who gets all the symbolism in books and movies and such (I always have to read the footnotes of Shakespeare, for example).

I figured it was just the one last tree that would remain standing in Cary if the current Council is permitted to continue the current out-of-control development.

In all honesty, that was my immediate thought when I first saw that lonely tree on his site. I know the intention is to show folks a serene, pretty picture but all I could focus on was the one tree and correlated it to out of control growth, and rezoning after rezoning.

Wup, I love The Giving Tree! It's one of my favorite books. I've read it to every Lunch Bunch group I've had in both kids classes since kindergarten. My oldest being in 6th grade now, my youngest in 4th. It is really interesting how the kids view it as they get older.
