CARY STEPPING UP ENFORCEMENT WITH FALL “CLICK IT OR TICKET” CAMPAIGN

CARY, NC – Starting tomorrow, the Town of Cary Police Department will join other State and local law enforcement agencies in cracking down on traffic safety violations during the fall 2004 “Click It or Ticket” Campaign. Motorists can expect increased seatbelt and child safety seat enforcement along with prescheduled seatbelt and DWI checkpoints. Statewide results of the spring’s campaign include nearly 23,000 citations issued for seatbelt and child seat violations. In Cary, more than 100 citations were issued.

With a compliance rate of 86.1 percent, North Carolina has recently fallen out of the top spot for seatbelt use in the Southeast. According to Sgt. Joe Clifton, supervisor of the Cary Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit, “Cary will do its part to put Wake County and North Carolina back at the top of the class since being at the top means saving lives.”

Current “Click It or Ticket” statistics show that when it comes to seatbelt citations in Cary, men are more than twice as likely to be in violation as women. While current law requires nearly all drivers to be belted, drivers of vans and pickup trucks continue to have the lowest reported seatbelt use rates in North Carolina. Wake County in particular ranks third in the state for fatalities involving ejected motorists. According to Sgt. Clifton, statistics such as these are a valuable tool for officers tasked with enforcement responsibilities. “Our officers will be working diligently to ensure that Cary motorists and their children are buckled up.”

To help ensure that children are buckled up properly, the Cary Police Department hosts a free child safety seat clinic every Wednesday at Fire Station #2 near the intersection of SE Maynard Road and Cary Towne Boulevard from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Cary police officers, who have been specially certified as child safety seat technicians, are also available to check child seats during other times by request. Sure you do.
