I advocated for Cary CERT in another thread. I've been through the initial training and it's a great program, and Cary now has formed our own CERT team, and it's growing.
I encourage this experience for anyone who's interested.

BE PREPARED TO HELP YOUR COMMUNITY WHEN A DISASTER STRIKES
Become a member of Cary’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), and be prepared to respond after natural strikes. CERT members are trained to take care of themselves first and then help others in their communities for the first three days following hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, winter storms, or man-made disasters. Register now for the free class that will meet on Friday, October 10 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday, October 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, October 12 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cary Fire Station #7, 6900 Carpenter Fire Station Road; classes are limited to 25 participants.
