So I’m watching President Bush’s speech during the convention and I kept saying to myself, “Didn’t John Kerry say that too?” and “Wow…he sounds more like a liberal than Kerry does!” I decided to put these speeches side-by-side and you know what? They sound pretty much the same. I had to keep looking up to see whose I was reading! I put together a little comparison…see if you can choose which candidate said what statement.

(You can find the answers here http://www.thesethingsiknow.com/blog/archives/2004/09/sheep_in_wolves.html)

A. We are here tonight united in one simple purpose: to make America stronger at home and respected in the world.
B. I am running for President with a clear and positive plan to build a safer world and a more hopeful America.

A . …we are here for something bigger than ourselves; he [from the WWII generation] lived out the responsibilities and sacrifices of the greatest generation to whom we owe so much.
B. And because that generation [WWII]of Americans held firm in the cause of liberty, we live in a better and safer world today.

A. In our world, and here at home, we will extend the frontiers of freedom.
B. The future…belongs to freedom. And the front lines of this battle are not just far away.

A. Remember the hours after September 11th, when we came together as one to answer the attack against our homeland.
B. The world saw that spirit three miles from here, when the people of this city faced peril together, and lifted a flag over the ruins, and defied the enemy with their courage.

A. We must, and we will, confront threats to America before it is too late.
B. …so we can get the terrorists before they get us.

A. I will never relent in defending America
B. I will never hesitate to use force when it is required. Any attack will be met with a swift and certain response. I will never give any nation or international institution a veto over our national security.

A. [We will transform] our military and reform and strengthen our intelligence services.
B. I will build a stronger American military.

A. They should remember the great idea of freedom for which so many have given their lives. Our purpose now is to reclaim democracy itself.
B. I believe all these things because freedom is not America's gift to the world, it is the Almighty God's gift to every man and woman in this world…I am proud that our country remains the hope of the oppressed, and the greatest force for good on this earth. And as freedom advances — heart by heart, and nation by nation — America will be more secure and the world more peaceful.

A. Our society rests on a foundation of responsibility and character and family values.
B. My fellow citizens, elections are about choices. And choices are about values

A. Opportunity for all – so that every child, every parent, every worker has an equal shot at living up to their God-given potential.
B. To stand with workers in poor communities — and those that have lost manufacturing, textile and other [jobs and industries]…we'll provide tax relief and other incentives to attract new business and improve housing and job training to bring hope and work throughout all of America…I support welfare reform that strengthens family…

A. Our education plan for a stronger America sets high standards and demands accountability from parents, teachers, and schools.
B. I believe every child can learn and every school must teach — so we passed the most important federal education reform in history…. We will leave no child behind.

A. And we will provide low-income Americans with better access to health care: In a new term, I will ensure every poor county in America has a community or rural health center.
We will…provide direct help for low-income Americans to purchase them. We will lead an aggressive effort to enroll millions of poor children who are eligible but not signed up for the government's health insurance programs.
B. And we value health care that's affordable and accessible for all Americans

A. You'll get to pick your own doctor – and patients and doctors, not insurance company bureaucrats, will make medical decisions.
B. We will make sure that health decisions are made by doctors and patients, not by bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.

A. I believe we have a moral responsibility to honor America's seniors…soon every senior will be able to get prescription drug coverage
B. Medicare will negotiate lower drug prices for seniors. And all Americans will be able to buy less expensive prescription drugs...

A. We value an America that controls its own destiny because it's finally and forever independent of Mideast oil.
B. To create jobs, we will make our country less dependent on foreign sources of energy.

Who said this?

We will always keep the promise of Social Security for our older workers.

By raising performance in our high schools, and expanding Pell grants for low and middle income families.

I fought to put a 100,000 cops on the street.

My fellow Americans, this is the most important election of our lifetime. The stakes are high. We are a nation at war – a global war on terror against an enemy unlike any we have ever known before.

double the number of people served by our principal job training program and increase funding for community colleges.

My fellow Americans, the world tonight is very different from the world of four years ago. But I believe the American people are more than equal to the challenge.

We will add 40,000 active duty troops

I believe every child can learn and every school must teach — so we passed the most important federal education reform in history.

We will provide our troops with the newest weapons and technology to save their lives – and win the battle.

We need to lead a global effort against nuclear proliferation – to keep the most dangerous weapons in the world out of the most dangerous hands in the world.

In this time of change, government must take the side of working families. In a new term, we will change outdated labor laws to offer comp time and flex time. Our laws should never stand in the way of a more family friendly workplace.

And our energy plan for a stronger America will invest in new technologies and alternative fuels and the cars of the future

Generations will know if we seized this moment, and used it to build a future of safety and peace.
