I started this once before, with the discussion of eight categories. I'm still trying to discuss those eight categories. Seems the truth hurt a few, and they decided to get into a urinary confrontation, so the entire topical thread was locked away from discussion. I'm not ready to stop discussion...on these eight categories. So once again, I post the eight biggest losers of 2008's election.....

1. Women

Probably the biggest losers in this election, women got kicked to the curb numerous times. First was Geraldine Ferrarro, who stood to say that Obama was only in the position because he was black. A true statement, for which she was trashed by nearly everyone, who quickly shot the messenger. Next up was Hillary. I don't like her myself, but she has been treated unfairly. I'm predicting she'll recover, and she won't be looking for a "make-nice" session with Obama. This girl wants her revenge. Then there was Sarah Palin. Overall, women took a beating.

2. The Free Press

I don't think the credibility of a free press will recover from their incredible display of parisanship and propaganda for decades, if ever. Such a "change" is not what was wanted by the American public to start with, but it is now an historical fact, a "collateral damage" of the First Amendment.

3. Religion

Religion has long been under fire, but the demonic impacts of those outbursts by Jeremiah Wright have certainly diminished it. Churches do a great many things besides pray. They are also a source of charity for many who need a helping hand in hard times. It can be said that the take-away message from this election is that religion has taken one on the chin, and that we should depend on the government for the services that the churches now provide. Mnay things have been promised by more government to come, but none of the things promised comes from charity and giving via churches.... it is now to come from force, and through taxation. Redistribution of the wealth, as we heard, is not going to be the haves helping the have nots, it is going to be the government robbing the rich, and deciding for the churches and the people who it will go to.

4. Small businesses

We have been treated to the spectacle of Joe the Plumber being trashed and investigated back into his proper place. Joe was ridiculed for many things... not having a plumber license among them. The aspirations of many who wish to own and run their own businesses were openly mocked and pummeled via the powerful interests of political expediency.

5. Retirement savings and investors

Wall street became the favorite du jour in the "financial crisis". Nobody, in either party, worked to stop the bailout. It was wrong, and nobody said so. Instead, the individuals who caused a meltdown are rewarded with infininitely more power. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, Bear Stearns, and on and on... we all know the list... took our money and ran. And we, who work hard and save even harder, will be seeing inflation rise with the printing of money to cover the debts incurred in our names. There is no other way to cover it.

6. Employment

Jobs have been going offshore for quite some time. It should come as no surprise that businesses are in the art of making money. When costs go up, the ways to save more of it rachet upward. As more programs are added that must be paid for with higher taxes, more cost savings will need to be realized by reducing staffs and payrolls. Cheaper labor will be more and more the answer to maintain profits. Taxing businesses to keep them here will only ensure the exodus of entire companies and whole sectors of various enterprises.

7. Defense

The success enjoyed in a turnaround in the Iraq war has also taken it off the table as an area of interest. We have been lulled into a feeling we no longer need concern ourselves with terrorism or wars, and that the troops can all now come home. We can expect that the defense budget will be cut, since the expectation is that there is a reduction in the need for it. Like the "Three Little Pigs", we have been spending money building our defenses of brick, and placing many of those who would harm us behind brick walls. We will now be removing many of the walls, and those we do keep will shortly consist of twigs. We're going to be told that twigs are sufficient, and that we need to spend the money on other "needs", which on closer inspection are actually large-ticket wants.... universal health care topping the list.

8. Campaign Finance Reform

Obama rejected the public financing, while McCain accepted. The result was a staggering difference in the economic muscle between the two campaigns. This action has taken apart any chance of ever reigning in spending on political campaigns, ever. From this point forward, it will be an all out donations and spending war.

There are more, but it has to do for now........

Women - You mentioned three specific women who all willingly put themselves out there. They are mature adults. They can take the negative that comes with politics, just like men can. They're not delicate hot house flowers. No one was treated unfairly. If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch. As for women in general, we'll all be better off with Supreme Court nominees considering our "health".

Free Press - The MSM bias is a republican strategy pushed since the early '90s. The free press will be better off with people in charge who truly believe in open and transparent gov't., not just say they do and then do the opposite. The free press will be better off not being charged $15 million for gov't e-mail and politicians using private e-mails for gov't business. There is certainly no historical fact you mentioned. It is a myth of perception. The first amendment is alive and well.

Religion - The only difference here is that the politicians will not be foisting their religion on us. The first amendment is alive and well. The true faithful know that one man cannot undermine religion in this country.

Small Business - Most small businesses make under $250,000 so they will be better off, as will JTP.

Retirement savings and investors - This one concerns me because of the article Wuptdo posted. The bailout mess would be happenning regardless.

Employment - Our economy is still reeling from the damaging effects of the last 8 years. Job loss will continue until the economy starts turning around. We are certainly better off than continuing down Bush's path with McCain, Mr. 90%.

Defense - Stopping the waste of billions being giving to defense contractor friends on a war to nowhere can only be an improvement. If all the billions wasted in Iraq had been used properly to beef up our security at home and to get Bin Laden, we'd all be much safer. After all the lives lost and the money spent on the Iraq war, we are no safer now than at the start of the war.

Campaign Finance - Don't see anything changing here no matter who is in charge. McCain showed that public financing doesn't work.

Still only 1 for 8.

Actually I'd say we just might be CLOSER to a change here. The main stumbling block before was the inability of the Republicans to conceive of giving up their huge money advantages. Now that they've maybe learned that maybe there are times when spending limits would possibly help THEM, too.........

Some who LOST BIG!!!!

McCain, Palin, Dole, republicans

..or to summarize, America...

But to stay on topic this time....

1) Women were treated universally unfairly, both Republican and Democrat. No excuse for any of it. Even a 16 year old girl caught hell for her unplanned pregnancy. Shameful to have such a discussion. Absolutely inexcusable.

2) The press was in the tank, and to go into denial now offends my intelligence. Really need to be realistic about what happened. We had MSNBC actually coming to the point of firing their own reporters due to the embarrassment they caused.

3) Religion - Jeremiah Wright and the whole issue of the evangelical movement, of "my god vs your God....", and the legitimate churches who now are in deeper trouble during a financial meltdown, due in large part to those who feel the "new, bigger, better" government should do it all, but never does. It sank to its lowest point at the local level with the Dole vs Hagan, "My God can beat up your God", I'm a Sunday school teacher", sand flipping kindergarten level nightmare. Hideous...

4) Small business - the scandals of all the bailouts, and the anti-business attitude that is now sweeping in is going to be really really awful news for the little guy businesses, who don't get a break or a bailout, and their taxes are going to go way up as the assumption is made that they are somehow "rich", leading to the demise of many in the crossfire of class warfare politics.

5) Investors - can't you just feel the love for AIG, Fannie Mae, Bear Stearns, Freddie, ....... and now, Obambi wants to bail out the union infestation of Detroit, and keep that circus of a hell-hole running good money after bad. Shameful waste if there ever was one.

6) Employment - early predictions are that unemployment may reach 10% within the next year. Remember Jimmy Carter?

7) Defense - again, we have the memories of Jimmy Carter and the hostage rescue attempt that the military couldn't pull off. Broken equipment, poor training and lousy recruitment in view of poor morale for all of the above, now coming to an Armed Forces near you soon.

8) Campaign finance - every election now will be a spending war.... the one with the biggest collection buys the election, and all the corruption that goes with it. We get, for multi-million dollar campaigns, a multi-year subscription to "Earplugs R Us".

Losers all around.......

....or just voted a clueless straight ticket to "get even", and had no concept of the damage they were inflicting.

There is a group forming that wants to ensure actual reporting in the future. What has happened to the American press is an international embarrassment, and that's only up to us to fix.

A coalition to fight media bias: 50 Million Americans (http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2008/11/coalition-to-fight-media-bias-50.html)

The mainstream media could have destroyed Barack Obama's campaign (http://directorblue.blogspot.com/2008/11/899mo-bmw-lease-payments-of-mediacrats.html) with a single 60 Minutes segment and a John Stossel ABC Special. Their failure to report on Obama's background and associates represents one of the biggest failings of today's political scene: complete lack of balance.

For that reason, a group called 50 Million Americans (http://www.50millionamericans.org/) is forming a citizens' coalition to fight media bias.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_orkXxp0bhEA/SRjZ4K0xE_I/AAAAAAAANrk/-2v4J-N1XPU/s400/081110-50millionamericans.jpg (http://www.50millionamericans.org/)We the People have been duped. It is painfully apparent that many of the largest media and news organizations in this country are corrupt and are incapable of being straight with us. These organizations have rejected their ethical obligations and now serve as voluntary propagandists (http://newsbusters.org/blogs/mark-finkelstein/2008/11/04/msnbc-election-coverage-promo-experience-power-change) to an openly biased political and social agenda.

In just the last few days we've witnessed several different reports where mainstream-media (MSM) representatives have dropped any pretense of objectivity and have openly admitted working with an institutionalized bias (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzMas1bVidw). They have confirmed purposely attacking people who do not fit this bias, and confirm failing to do their duty (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/07/AR2008110702895_pf.html) to adequately investigate those people who best fit the bias...
Check it out (http://www.50millionamericans.org/) and report back here when you're done.

Update: Oregon Live's David Reinhard (http://www.oregonlive.com/news/oregonian/david_reinhard/index.ssf/2008/11/and_one_more_thing_david_reinh.html) has called it quits.

...my chief reason for leaving [is that] I want to be part of a team that shares a common goal and commitment. I want to work with folks who share my basic values. I no longer want to be the odd man out. I don't want to start my mornings with a running argument about politics that I'll almost invariably lose by virtue of the stacked numbers. Sad to say, today's newspaper business is not that place. Its fierce diversity efforts don't seem to extend to broadening the range of acceptable opinions in the trade. So much "diversity," yet so much monolithic thinking.
That's a **** shame.

When a group says that they want unbiased reporting, they usually just want reporting that is biased in their favor.

I think that is the case with "50millionamericans.org".

No idea, but that's the same answer we have about your President-elect... but what I do know is that we are still in the transition period, and already there is a lot of talk about not knowing what the future holds, what are his plans and his policies, what does change mean.... and the realization that nobody bothered to ask. "Our" news media failed. Period.

Still thinking there's a free and independent thinking press in America? the you obviously haven't heard about the "Eisenstat hoax". What is it? It's a manufactured story of and by the press, to smear Sarah palin for the advancement of the liberal agenda. Truth is that the whole "Africa: continent of country" media circus was made up by a news media group, that was picked up and aired by MSM biggies, who simply not only didn't question the story, but served to advance it as true, whether factual or not. It was a hoax, with political intent.

The question on everyone’s mind, who is Martin Eisenstandt? He describes himself as a senior fellow at the Harding Institute (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/12/AR2008111202624.html) for Freedom and Democracy. He even has a website at www.eisenstadtgroup.com (http://www.eisenstadtgroup.com/). But wait, guess what? He is an apparition, a son of Peter the Rabbit. That’s right, the story is bogus (http://military.rightpundits.com/2008/11/10/martin-eisenstadt-palin-accuser-hoax/), and so is this Eisenstandt and the Harding Institute (See video below). And MSNBC reported it with out any vetting. MSNBC quickly realized that the story was bogus and have since retracted (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jiO_hn-5SfG9hdADHuRZ6hEDqNRAD94DQU5O0) the story. Jeremy Gains, a spokesman for MSNBC said that it was a mistake and should never have gone on the air. According to Gains, the story was passed along to David Shuster by a producer with the assumption that the story was valid.
MSNBC is not the only ones to be had by this Eisenstandt fellow. He has been quoted and debunked by other news organizations. The LA Times, the Huffington Post, and the New Republic have all been duped by this hoax.
It should be noted that the original Fox story was not a hoax, as far as citing an anonymous source from the McCain campaign saying that Palin didn’t know Africa was a continent.YouTube - Martin Eisenstadt responds to "The Last Republican"

We’ve all heard all the rumors being spread around about what a horrible vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin was. These supposed leaks from a McCain campaign adviser have been relentless. She’s been accused of being a diva. They said she and her family shopped at high end stores throughout the campaign and called the whole bunch of them Wasilla Hillbillies. As if she had TIME and everyone wouldn’t have seen them with cameras following them constantly.

This before now unnamed person in McCain’s campaign accused her of refusing to prepare for debates, said she didn’t know Africa was a continent and was just basically a dumb, ignorant, ditsy female who was chosen for her looks and charisma rather than her talent and capabilities.

Now the guy who has made all these allegations has decided to come forward and take his claim to fame and throw in more accusations just for the fun of it. He has even been quoted on celebrity blogs spreading rumors about Joe the Plumber and various women along the campaign trail.

His name is Martin Eisenstadt and he doesn’t exist. He’s a hoax. He managed to pull off an elaborate hoax. He set up a website and even created a website for the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy, which also doesn’t exist. Someone obviously has way too much time on his hands and is even now rolling on the floor laughing in his grandmothers basement as he watches the uproar he created and damage he did to Sarah Palin’s reputation and John McCain’s campaign.

Unless, of course, it was set up by Obama believers, which is entirely possible. But then, those same people would also be laughing in their grandmothers basements at the big hoax they pulled off.

These rumors and accusations have managed to make their way into news reports on main stream news organizations and countless left wing blogs. Of course, many right wing blogs have picked them up as well. Now they all are having to acknowledge that Martin Eisenstadt doesn’t exist and this whole thing has being nothing more than a Palin accuser hoax. At least some of the blogs are retracting the stories.

Its no surprise that MSNBC ran with the story.

It would be good to remember that whoever controls the media, controls the world. That’s kind of a scary thought in this advanced media world.

That's right, it was an orchestrated bag of dirty tricks, just like those of Richard Nixon's Watergate excesses, except these were "PC Approved" dirty tricks on the part of Democrats, so no harm, no foul. And in that is found the demise of the free press as a major casualty of the 2008 election.

Except of course that it looks like the "Eisenstat hoax" may be the actual hoax, made up to discredit the real reports from a McCain adviser.

It should be noted that the original Fox story was not a hoax, as far as citing an anonymous source from the McCain campaign saying that Palin didn’t know Africa was a continent.

That's the curious thing about this....Eisenstadt was not a part of the McCain campaign, and acted as if he was, and the news media accepted that he was without questioning the source. Fox was correct in saying the source was anonymous, not that it was an official campaign spokesman. Seems to me that the point here is that the MSM wanted so badly to castrate the McCain campaign, that they never bothered to check their sources, and used ad nauseum a hoax. They wanted the source to be legit, so to them they were too overjoyed to actually operate in the mode of discovery, and ran with false information.

Or would you take a different view if someone purported to be from the Obama campaign said Obama had said this, and the press reported it as true, without searching to determine the anonymous source wasn't legit?

It's obviously too late for the McCain campaign to right a wrong here, but the fact that we have a rogue press should scare the hell out of everybody, left, right or neutered. They can and have set out to destroy people, simply because they can. In this case, they chose a Republican to destroy, but it could have been anyone... Is that REALLY the America we deserve? The military has long used this tactic, in military parlance referred to as disinformation... a lie that is used to destroy an enemy. Are we now to use actual battlefield tactics from war tactics in our politics, and declare them legitimate?

Dictionary: (http://www.answers.com/library/Dictionary-cid-23442) disinformation

(dĭs-ĭn'fər-mā'shən) http://content.answers.com/main/content/img/pron.gif

Deliberately misleading information announced publicly or leaked by a government or especially by an intelligence agency in order to influence public opinion or the government in another nation: “He would be the unconscious channel for a piece of disinformation aimed at another country's intelligence service” (Ken Follett).
Dissemination of such misleading information.

Destroying people makes news, and that sells newspapers or increases ratings. We don't have a rogue press, we have a prostitute press. Riding the Obama dream train gave a lot of people what they wanted to hear or read about. And tapping into America's Bush hatred by amplifying every misstep the McCain campaign made was a big seller, not to mention a boost for SNL ratings to the highest they have been in years.
All that and McCain still won 44% of the popular vote!

DarylB

A reminder.... Chris Matthews was "reporting" a "tingle down his leg when he listened to Obama"..... and the Olbermann debacle is the stuff of press infamy. I will have to disagree with this election not being a whack job on McCain, and the very fact that the MSM knowingly and willfully took this step in and of itself qualifies it as "rogue". The press actively worked for and reported in such a way as to sway the outcome of an election. They admittedly ran a disinformation campaign on the American public. Matthews and others have confirmed this to be true, and have confessed to doing so. We no longer have fair and unbiased elections as a result. The trust we had given to the press is now forever forward suspect and tainted. It can't go back to pretending that it is practicing journalism, or that it has any sense of journalistic ethics.... it does not. The loss of the free press is a loss of a Constitutional principle..... was that loss worth the election of Barack Obama?

A question.... should not a press organization that resorts to the use of the techniques of tactical warfare not be addressed by the offended party as if they were a combatant, and have their stations jammed and their presses bombed and/or sabotaged? Where does engagement in a deliberate disinformation campaign lead the offending party if not to use the press as an agent of poitical destruction? What excesses are now to be expected from the offended party? Do we now approve of Nixon and Watergate? Do we now have a situation where the role of a political campaign for elective office is no longer to inform the public, where simple dirty tricks and stealth slander are becoming (have become?) the preferred tools of the better/best financed campaign, in a winner take all cage match of destruction?

On the 15th anniversary of her position as a permanent co-host on the NBC TV News program, Today Katie Couric announced that she would leave the show to be the new anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News replacing Dan Rather. CBS billed Couric as "the first female solo anchor of a weekday network evening news broadcast,".
They spent millions marketing to and preparing their audience for her arrival. In this quest to push the Couric experience in the words of Gil Schwartz, executive vice president of communications for CBS Corp. someone in the CBS photo department "got a little zealous" with Couric's picture that was released in May as her official image. While people on magazine covers are airbrushed everyday, Couric's picture gained a lot of criticism as she was supposed to be a serious reporter able to fill Rather and Cronkite's shoes.
Couric herself brushed off the story saying, "I liked the first picture better because there’s more of me to love"

Wow... talk about going WWWWWWAAAAAAYYYYYYY back for a story.

Daryl lives, eternally, in 2006 when Republicans ruled the world.

I made the following points back on Nov 11, 2008....

Such a "change" is not what was wanted by the American public to start with, but it is now an historical fact, a "collateral damage" of the First Amendment.

... and slowly but surely, the forensic evidence to support that earlier position becomes clearer and publicly available.... results of a prosyletizing, agenda laden media that didn't do its job.....

Seems more newspapers are going out of business, I'm sure due to both the internet, as well as due to the issues of credibility which have developed, as we all are now more than aware. Some of these papers have been the most activist, therefore making their reduced circulation self explanatory.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer newspaper goes Web-only (AP)

SEATTLE - The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, which has chronicled the news of the city since logs slid down its steep streets to the harbor and miners caroused in its bars before heading north to Alaska's gold fields, will print its final edition Tuesday.
Hearst Corp., which owns the 146-year-old P-I, said Monday that it failed to find a buyer for the newspaper, which it put up for a 60-day sale in January after years of losing money. Now the P-I will shift entirely to the Web.
"Tonight will be the final run, so let's do it right," publisher Roger Oglesby told the newsroom.
Hearst's decision to abandon the print product in favor of an Internet-only version is the first for a large American newspaper, raising questions about whether the company can make money in a medium where others have come up short.
David Lonay, 80, a subscriber since 1950, said he'll miss a morning ritual that can't be replaced by a Web-only version.
"The first thing I do every day is get the P-I and read it," Lonay said. "I really feel like an old friend is dying."
Hearst's move to end the print edition leaves the P-I's larger rival, The Seattle Times, as the only mainstream daily in the city.
"It's a really sad day for Seattle," said P-I reporter Angela Galloway. "The P-I has its strengths and weaknesses but it always strove for a noble cause, which was to give voice to those without power and scrutiny of those with power."
Seattle follows Denver in becoming losing a daily newspaper this year. The Rocky Mountain News closed after its owner, E.W. Scripps Co., couldn't find a buyer. In Arizona, Gannett Co.'s Tucson Citizen is set to close Saturday, leaving one newspaper in that city.
And last month Hearst said it would close or sell the San Francisco Chronicle if the newspaper couldn't slash expenses in coming weeks.
The newspaper industry has seen ad revenue fall in recent years as advertisers migrate to the Internet, particularly to sites offering free or low-cost alternatives for classified ads. Starting last summer, the recession intensified the decline in advertising revenue in all categories.
Four newspaper companies, including the owners of the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and The Philadelphia Inquirer, have sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in recent months.
While the P-I's Web site ensures it a continued presence in the Seattle news market, it will likely be a pared-down version of its former self — with a heavy reliance on blogs and links to other news outlets.
The P-I had 181 employees, but Managing Editor David McCumber said the Web site would employ about 20 in the newsroom operation and another 20 to sell ads. He said he would not be working on the new site.
Steven R. Swartz, president of Hearst Newspapers, said the online P-I would not just be "a newspaper online."
"It's an effort to craft a new type of digital business with a robust, community news and information Web site at its core," Swartz said.
Hearst said the online edition will include some of the newspaper's marquee names, including sports columnist Art Thiel, political columnist Joel Connelly and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist David Horsey. Horsey also is under contract to continue drawing for Hearst's other newspapers.

In February, the P-I Web site had 1.8 million unique visitors and 50 million page views, according to Nielsen Online. Meanwhile the newspaper's print circulation was down to 117,000, from nearly 200,000 in 1998, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
It's unclear how the online-only venture will affect the Times, which is controlled by the Blethen family and has a circulation of 199,000. The Times has had severe financial troubles of its own and has cut 500 positions in the past year.
Since 1983, the P-I and The Times have shared business operations in a joint operating agreement in which The Times handles advertising, printing and other business functions for both newspapers.
The P-I has had a feisty rivalry with The Times, which intensified when the Times shifted from afternoon to morning publication in 2000.
The P-I's roots date to 1863, when Seattle was still a frontier town and James Watson founded its precursor, the Seattle Gazette, as a four-page weekly.
The newspaper changed hands, names and offices several times — including when the 1889 great Seattle fire destroyed its office — before newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst bought the P-I in 1921 through a representative. Hearst later revealed his ownership of the newspaper in an editorial, according to the P-I archives.
"Every idea, every movement, every debate in Seattle's civic life was reflected on the front page of the paper," said Leonard Garfield, executive director of the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle.
Some of the newspaper's more famous employees over the years included novelist Tom Robbins, columnist Emmett Watson and Frank Herbert, author of the science fiction novel "Dune."
Former P-I columnist Susan Paynter, who retired in 2007 after 39 years at the newspaper, said the P-I pushed the envelope on stories, running early pieces on abortion and the Equal Rights Amendment.
"The P-I was really on the forefront of telling the average person's story and why it mattered," Paynter said.
Horsey, the cartoonist who won the newspaper's only two Pulitzer Prizes in 1999 and 2003, said much would be lost when the print product ceases publishing. "A daily newspaper tells the stories of a community and lets the people of a city know who they are, who their neighbors are, and the life and issues they share," Horsey said. "When you lose any one newspaper, you lose a piece of that."
