1,000 cases of suspicious voter registrations
Lake, Summit officials intend to investigate
Friday, September 24, 2004
Steve Luttner and Michael Scott
Plain Dealer Reporters
More than 1,000 voter registration forms and absentee ballot requests may be fraudulent in Lake and Summit counties, where investigations of irregularities are broadening.
Lake County Sheriff Daniel Dunlap said Thursday that he will investigate an attempt to register a dead person and other possibly fraudulent documents that were submitted to the Lake County Board of Elections.
Dunlap also said he has notified the FBI and the Ohio secretary of state.
"We want to make sure the election here in Lake County is the best possible," Dunlap said. "I don't know if this was a concerted effort or if it was just an overzealous, independent person here and there who decided to push the envelope."
Elections officials have said hundreds of absentee ballot applications and dozens of voter registration cards are in question. Lake County Prosecutor Charles Coulson, also involved in the probe, said the problems are more significant than originally thought.
"We've seen voter fraud before, but never on this level," Coulson said Thursday. "I grew up in Chicago and this looks like the politics of Mayor Daley in the '50s and '60s."
Lake election and law enforcement officials said their investigation is centered on absentee registration attempts by the nonpartisan NAACP's National Voter Fund and an anti-Bush, nonprofit group called Americans Coming Together, or ACT Ohio.
The National Voter Fund could not be reached Wednesday or Thursday at its Washington, D.C., offices.
A spokesman for ACT Ohio, however, said the group believed the allegations would prove groundless.
Several registration applications submitted by campaign volunteers for a candidate are also being scrutinized, Lake elections board Director Jan Clair said.
None of the officials would identify the candidate, however.
Dunlap said the probe will include visits from detectives to addresses of the voters in question.
In one other instance, an elderly nursing home resident who usually signs with an "X" appeared to have a firm, cursive signature when she registered.
"We are going to have to see who's alive and who's well," Dunlap said.
"We're going to have to burn up some shoe leather."
In Summit County, meanwhile, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation has agreed to assist the Sheriff's Department in the examination of 803 suspect voter registration applications.
Bryan Williams, director of the Summit County Board of Elections, said high interest in this year's presidential election has resulted in unprecedented numbers of voter registrations, absentee ballot requests and irregular voter applications.
Williams said the suspect voter registration applications include some with nonexistent addresses while others from the same street all have the street identically misspelled.
Williams said that usually people applying to vote fill out their own cards before signing them, drawing attention to the odd fact that the street name is not spelled correctly.
Still other voter registration cards bear strikingly similar handwriting, suggesting one person submitted a group of fraudulent voter registration cards.
"We are not certified handwriting experts, but we believe that these were common looking signatures," Williams said.
He said there are many groups aggressively trying to register new voters in time for the November election.
He said that in most instances, it's difficult to determine what group or individual submitted voter registration cards.

Seeing how key consituencies of the Donkeycrat party fight like hell to allow felons the "right" to vote and that when they do register, illegally, most all register as Donkeys there is a disincentive for the left to worry about that type of vote fraud.
I wouldn't expect Mike Easley and the NC Donkeys to push to clean up NC's voter rolls to remove felons, multiple registrants, dead registrants, and other such illegal shenanigans. It would cut into their vote totals too much.

Denver TV station reports on Leftwing "community organizations" fabricating or tampering with voter registration forms:
Tampering (http://www.9news.com/acm_news.aspx?OSGNAME=KUSA&IKOBJECTID=8ac173fd-0abe-421a-011e-5ce7dfcf561e&TEMPLATEID=0c76dce6-ac1f-02d8-0047-c589c01ca7bf)
The I-Team has uncovered some disturbing evidence of voter registration fraud. 10 p.m. Oct. 11, 2004.
DENVER - With just 21 days left until an election in which every vote will count, the 9News I-Team has uncovered voter registration fraud that could cause chaos on Election Day for hundreds, possibly thousands of Colorado voters.
9News has discovered a record number of fraudulent voter-registrations across the state. Secretary of State Donetta Davidson tells 9News she is concerned about what the I-Team has uncovered and wants those responsible prosecuted. "It has just gone rampant," she told reporter Deborah Sherman in an interview Monday afternoon.
Most of the fraud has come from registration drives, where people at grocery stores or on the streets ask you to sign up. 9News has learned many workers have re-registered voters multiple times by changing or making up information about them. 9News has documented 719 cases of potentially fraudulent forms at county election offices show fraudulent names, addresses, social security numbers or dates of birth in Denver, Douglas, Adams, Boulder and Lake counties. Information from other counties is still coming in.
Some voter registration application forms are completely bogus. Others belong to legitimate voters, who have had one or two facts changed that could affect their registration when they show up at the polls November 2nd. Tom Stanislawski registered to vote six years ago. But this summer, someone signed him up again and changed his party affiliation. "My concern would be I'd walk in November 2nd and be unable to vote," he said.
Some of the registration drive workers earn $2 per application or about $10 an hour. One woman admitted to forging three people's names on about 40 voter registration applications. Kym Cason says she was helping her boyfriend earn more money from a get-out-the-vote organization called ACORN or Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. ACORN works with low or moderate-income families on housing issues. Cason said her extra registrations earned her boyfriend $50.
Gerald Obi says workers pressured him to keep registering to vote so they too could earn extra cash. When asked how many times he had registered this year, Obi said, "about 35 times."
ACORN's state director said they are victims of the fraud as well and told 9News the group is cooperating with local investigators. Ross Fitzgerald says the group has fired workers for the fraud. "Our goal is to register as many people as we can," said Fitzgerald. "If they're fraudulent, that hurts our numbers."
Clerk and Recorders from several counties met Monday with Secretary of State Donetta Davidson to discuss this problem, and the problem of felons registering to vote. "I have to question whether we should be allowing people to accept money for voter registration," said Douglas County Clerk and Recorder Carole Murray.
Colorado Secretary of State Donetta Davidson agreed and said she will be looking at ways to reform the system.

INTELLIGENT RIDDLE
John Kerry meets with the Queen of England. He asks her, "Your Majesty, how do you run such an efficient government? Are there any tips you can give to me?"
"Well," says the Queen, "the most important thing is to surround yourself with intelligent people."
Kerry frowns. "But how do I know the people around me are really intelligent?"
The Queen takes a sip of tea. "Oh, that's easy. You just ask them to answer an intelligent riddle." The Queen pushes a button on her intercom. "Please send Tony Blair in here, would you?"
Tony Blair walks into the room. "Yes, my Queen?" the Queen smiles.
"Answer me this, please, Tony. Your mother and father have a child. It is not your brother and it is not your sister. Who is it?"
Without pausing for a moment, Tony Blair answers, "That would be me."
"Yes! Very good," says the Queen.
Kerry goes back home to ask John Edwards, his vice presidential choice the same question. "John. Answer this for me. Your mother and your father have a child. It's not your brother and it's not your sister. Who is it?"
"I'm not sure," says John Edwards. "Let me get back to you on that one."
Edwards goes to his advisors and asks every one, but none can give him an answer. Finally, he ends up in the men's room and recognizes Colin Powell's shoes in the next stall. Edwards shouts, "Colin!
Can you answer this for me? Your mother and father have a child and it's not your brother or your sister. Who is it?"
Colin Powell yells back, "That's easy. It's me!" Edwards smiles, and says, "Thanks!"
Then, Edwards goes back to speak with Kerry. "Say, I did some research and I have the answer to that riddle. It's Colin Powell."
Kerry gets up, stomps over to John Edwards, and angrily yells into his face, "No, you idiot! It's Tony Blair!"

What my Dad does...by little Joey ......
Little Joey was in his fourth-grade class when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living. All the typical answers came up -- fireman, cook, policeman, janitor, journalist, salesman, doctor, garbage man, lawyer, etc.
Joey was uncharacteristically quiet, so the teacher asked him about his father. "He's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and other men put money in his underwear. Sometimes he'll go home with a guy."
The teacher, obviously shaken, set the other children to work on some exercises and took Joey aside, asking, "Is that really true about your father?"
"No," said Joey, "He works for the Kerry campaign, but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids.

ACORN, a leftwing political action outfit allied with the Kerry campaign. They're conducting "voter registration" drives, oddly enough, in swing states Kerry desperately has to win. Almost as if they're getting their marching orders from the Kerry campaign, that can't be happening though, that'd be illegal.
What is known so far is that ACORN reps have been busted in Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio, Colorado, and other places submitting falsified voter registration applications. Non-existant addresses, non-existant people, registering people that were already registered - without their consent, and there appears to be an effort to get absentee ballots for already registered voters into the hands of ACORN reps - not the voters.
Colorado has problems so profound cases are being referred to the Attorney General's office, but he is stalling since he's on the ballot for the US Senate this election.
Bill Hobbs has a catalog of links of news stories from around the nation from TV stations and newspapers detailing the fraud.

I wonder how long before some leftists pops off with the inevitable "They all do it." justification for the Donkeys attempt to steal an election?

Democrat playbook opened to criticism
Leaked page reveals push to use tactic of 'pre-emptive strike'
By Peggy Lowe, Rocky Mountain News
October 15, 2004
Democrats got caught with their election playbook open Thursday when a leaked page was published urging operatives to lodge a "pre-emptive strike" of claiming voter intimidation, whether it's true or not.
Gleeful Republicans quickly called a press conference after the page from The Drudge Report went online, in which they denounced "a new low in gutter politics" that "played the race card."
"They want to rile up the minorities to denounce tactics that do not exist," said Ted Halaby, chairman of the Colorado GOP.
Halaby said it was "a criminal act to falsely allege something that does not exist." He called on the state Democrats to "denounce and renounce" the manual's teachings.
But Democrats, who verified as authentic the page from a playbook called "Colorado Election Day Manual: A detailed guide to voting in Colorado," said they must be pro-active to assure that minorities and all others are not scared away from the polls.
Sue Casey, head of the Kerry-Edwards Colorado campaign, said the Republicans are also happy to plant a negative story to detract from what reporters should be writing about.
"Look what we're talking about today instead of the fact that George Bush lost three debates and is fading, instead of not having health care, instead of having a disaster in Iraq," she said.
The manual, at www.drudgereport.com, instructs operatives to hunt for Republican scare tactics that could keep voters from the polls. Democrats have claimed for decades that the GOP does that because low voter turnouts generally help Republican candidates.
"If no signs of intimidation techniques have emerged yet, launch a pre-emptive strike," rule No. 2 says.
Then, the manual says the operatives should issue a press release "reviewing Republican tactics used in your area or state." They should also quote "party/minority/civil rights leadership as denouncing tactics that discourage people from voting."
Indeed, a press release from the Colorado Democrats on Wednesday looked straight out of the playbook.
After Secretary of State Donetta Davidson and Gov. Bill Owens, both Republicans, said anyone caught defrauding the voter registration process would be prosecuted, the Democrats shot out a statement decrying Davidson's and Owens' remarks as "voter intimidation."
The release also quoted two minority elected officials: Rick Garcia and Michael Hancock, both city councilmen. But Casey said she first saw the playbook on Thursday morning, the day after they had issued the press release.
"The first time I saw it was today after reporters called. We sort of looked at each other and said 'Gee, we did all the right things,' " she said.
But Casey also defended what she had said in the Wednesday statement, saying Owens and Davidson sent a message to voters that said, "be careful . . . If you are found ineligible you won't vote."
The Democrats message is much different, Casey said.
"We believe in democracy," she said. "We believe every person who is eligible should be able to vote. We think we should send the message: be confident. If you're eligible, go vote."
Late Thursday, Owens dismissed Casey's charge, telling a group of President Bush backers at a gathering at the Denver Diner that Casey was simply playing by the Democratic playbook. He said he's highly concerned about news reports about people registering to vote dozens of times.
"We're not trying to intimidate anybody," Owens said. "I'm encouraging Coloradoans to go to the polls. I want it to be a fair and honest vote, not skewed by somebody who registered 35 times."
What the document says
A page from the Democrats' "Colorado Election Day Manual: A detailed guide to voting in Colorado" appeared on the Drudge Report.
• Chapter 2 says: "If no signs of intimidation techniques have emerged yet, launch a pre-emptive strike."
• Operatives are directed to issue a news release "reviewing Republican tactics used in your area or state."
• They should also quote "party/minority/ civil rights leadership as denouncing tactics that discourage people from voting."

MAN GIVEN CRACK COCAINE TO REGISTER VOTERS ARRESTED IN OHIO
Mon Oct 18 2004 13:26:03 ET
October 18, 2004
The Defiance County Sheriff's Office arrested Chad Staton, age 22, of Stratton Ave., Defiance, on a charge of False Registration, in Violation of Section 3599.11 of the Ohio Revised Code, a felony of the fifth degree.
The SheriffŐs Office alleges that Staton filled out over 100 voter registration forms that were fictitious. Staton was to be paid for each registration form that he could get citizens to fill out. However, Staton himself filled out the registrations and returned them to the woman who hired him from Toledo, Ohio. Deputies allege that Staton was paid crack cocaine for the falsified registrations.
Defiance Deputies along with Toledo Police Department detectives conducted a search warrant of a residence on Woodland in Toledo, believed to be the home of the woman who hired Staton to solicit voter registration. Officers confiscated drug paraphernalia along with voter registration forms from the home. The occupant of the home, Georgianne Pitts, age 41, advised law enforcement, along with Ohio B.C.I.&I., that she had been recruited by Thaddeus J. Jackson, II, of Cleveland, to obtain voter registrations. Pitts admitted to paying Staton crack cocaine for the registrations in lieu of money.
A business card provided by Pitts indicated that Jackson is the Assistant NVF Ohio Director of the NAACP National Voter Fund.
The initial complaint received by the Sheriff's Office came from the Defiance County Board of Elections. The Board had received the 100 plus registration forms from the Cuyahoga Board of Elections that had been submitted to the Cuyahoga Board by the NAACP National Voter Fund.

That's your side at work Holly.
I'd be the last one to every say the GOP'ers are as pure as the driven snow, however, when one speaks of vote fraud the Donkeys are the self-righteous Masters. They are purveyors of fraudulent ballots in numbers that make any other US political party, past or present, look like rank amatuers at best.
The reason is simple. The GOP represents people who have the most too loose through a crimminal conviction. They're the party of small business owners, social conservatives, judicial "strict constructionists" for whom the process is sacrosanct. The Donkeys have none of those inhibitions and view the law as an impediment if it blocks their "important work".
Get used to it. Get used to having your party try to block requirements for picture ID's for ballot access in legislation after the election also.
