NCDOT TO HOST PEDESTRIAN PLANNING AND DESIGN WORKSHOPS
Five One-Day Workshops Will Enhance Pedestrian Transportation in North Carolina
RALEIGH—The N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Division of Highways and the NCDOT Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation (DBPT), along with the N.C. State University Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE), are jointly sponsoring a series of five one-day pedestrian planning and design workshops aimed at increasing the “walkability” of North Carolina and meeting the growing demand for pedestrian facilities throughout the state. The workshops will be held during the week of October 11-15 and are open to local and state transportation professionals.
“Pedestrian transportation is a vital part of our efforts to build a multi-modal transportation system in North Carolina,” said Transportation Secretary Lyndo Tippett. “These workshops will provide our staff and other transportation professionals with the knowledge, skill and guidance necessary to more fully integrate pedestrian transportation into the department’s programs and better serve the citizens of our state.”
The workshops will provide information on the planning and design of pedestrian facilities in conjunction with other transportation projects to improve accessibility and safety and to better integrate pedestrians into the overall transportation system. Topics range from sidewalk design and intersection design to enhancing pedestrian access and a review of NCDOT policies, standards and guidelines that impact pedestrian transportation. The sessions also aim to familiarize transportation professionals throughout NCDOT and the state with the latest research findings on pedestrian-related issues.
Charlie Zegeer, the Associate Director of the Highway Safety Research Center at the University of North Carolina, and Michael Ronkin, the Oregon Bicycle and Pedestrian Program Manager, will present the workshops throughout the week. Both have been involved with pedestrian research and training funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
Workshops will be held daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Raleigh. The Monday and Friday workshops will take place at ITRE on N.C. State University’s Centennial Campus in Room 2600. Workshops on Tuesday through Thursday will be held at the Sheraton Capital Center in the Willow Oak Room. Attendance is limited to 40 participants per day, and the registration deadline is October 6.
