I not sure if it is the "artist" or the "executives" that are doing this, however, the music industry once again are protecting their future profits.
The Inducing Infringements of Copyrights Act (S.2560) is an industry bill currently working its way through the Senate Judiciary Committee. A little too quickly according to people watching this. To quote the Independent (Fiona Morgan) "Yes, that's right: Assault weapons are now back on the market, but wireless networking is dangerous because we might use it to "steal" digitial copies of music."

Intel, Google, Yahoo, Earthlink, Verizon, as well as, Public Knowledge and the Future of Music Coalition represent technology groups trying to fight this. I wonder where the IBM "BlueTooth" people are?

OK, I am a little bias on this subject, so please check out:

I don't care what the nature of the work or product, if you, an individual or a firm, creates something and sells it for a profit your patent protection should be 5 years, no more, no less. Any violations in that time should be more vigorously enforced then they are today, but with the shorter period of protection overall unobstructed use in the public domain would, of course, increase.

Sorry, that was a little tangential but it too raises my ire at times. I believe in supporting worthwhile artists, I have zero mp3s or other copied music cds. I think the "music industry" broadly and the RIAA specifically is a superfluous leftover from an era passed that is finding that the only way to stay in the markets of today, where it is showing its age and losing support, is to attempt to alter the rules to stay in the game. Which, I suppose, is a legitimate business tactic but not one I think that deserves or signals much support for too long.
