Anybody here have experience with one of the new electric auto-hammers like Craftsman Nextec? Wondering if it will really drive a 3" 12d nail or should just buy a palm nailer instead.

Went ahead and bought a palm nailer made by Rigid. It works pretty for tight spaces in between joists which is exactly what I needed :-)

My thumbs prefer an 18 volt cordless drill with a deck screw bit (square). Plus the screws never back out.

Mine too. Unfortunately, the building code for decks when attaching rim / ledger boards requires 12d hot-dipped nails, 3 every 6" to protect against vertical shear. You could use twice the # of screws and technically still fail inspection :-( One of many examples where the code is a little screwed up - IMO.
