When several of her friends, including myself, approached Yvonne Brannon and urged her to run for Wake Couny Commissioner, she was initially reluctant. She is not a professional politician. She is busy as Director of NCSU's Urban Planning Center where she is known as Dr. Brannon. As a working mother, and grandmother she has a busy family life. She is an active community volunteer for many environmental associations. Furthering her reluctance, she knew from her previous term as Commissioner that her campaign would not be well funded as she is not supported by the biggest contributors - the developers. It was her passionate committment to public education that made her change her mind. She thought about how the current administration was short changing the schools and the community college. She was convinced that more could be done to grow the number of high-paying jobs. She was convinced this would increase the tax base so that we could afford to build more schools.
