In olden days they used to have crossroad villages instead of characterless strip malls at neighborhood activity centers. Hays Barton at Five Points in Old Raleigh is one of the few remaining villages. NOFO at the Pig is one of four restaurants in the village. (The Bloomsbury Bistro is another - the #1 restaurant in Raleigh). A visit to Hays Barton is a nostalgia trip to see what old neighborhoods used to be like - before big box stores and strip malls did them in.

NOFO is housed in an old Piggly Wiggly supermarket. The architechture, murals, wild crystal chandelier and decor is highly imaginative. The top floor is a housewares botique + a prepared foods counter visible from the downstairs restaurant and bar. NOFO is an acronym for north fourth street, the site of the original restaurant in Wilmington.

The food is eclectic southern, e.g. shrimp and grits, southwestern egg rolls, roast chicken, fried grouper over tortellini and so on. Generally above average cooking. Good bread. Interesting mixed drinks plus a fairly priced wide selection of wines. Save room for the best ice cream in the Triangle from Cosmic. Prices are moderate. Two drinks, a big tossed salad, two entrees plus one large scoop of praline ice cream and coffee was $55 including tax and tip. This is a favorite we keep going back to. Nothing like it in Cary.

Stan,

Thanks for that review. It sounds good and we'll defintely give it a try. I wondered what was going in that location the last time I was by there.

Yes, it's amazing how Hayes Barton has hung on. Those old village centers just succumbed to the culture of the car, and never could figure out how to provide the parking that the new shopping centers have.

But Hayes Barton has the benefit of some high dollar homes nearby, and the current cache of providing a bit of urban chic in an area that has become exclusive due to gentrification.

A couple of questions. Where exactly is this place (roads or reference points)? Is it safe at night? Other than that, seems like a place I would like to check out.

Thanks,

Wup,

Five Points is where the Rialto movie theater is located. Lily's Pizza is next door. NOFO's driveway is on Fairview. Fairview, Glenwood and Whittaker Mill roads meet at five points.. East of NCSU - North of South Glenwood. It is safe at night.
