CARY TO HOLD INPUT SESSIONS
ON DRAFT ANNEXATION PROGRAM DOCUMENT

CARY, NC – Tomorrow, the Town of Cary will hold the first of two public input sessions to receive additional comments on and suggestions for a draft of Part 1 of a proposed Annexation Program--a new, comprehensive policy document that that will help guide future annexation decisions that provide for an orderly and predictable extension of the Town’s municipal boundaries; the document is not a plan for annexation and does not specify or provide timetables for annexing any identified properties. While not required by State law, the new draft Program has been developed by staff at the direction of the Cary Town Council to help potential annexees as well as existing Cary citizens understand the various aspects of annexation. Interested citizens should drop in anytime to one of the two identical open houses, both of which will be held 4-8 p.m. on March 29th and April 7th at the Cary Senior Center, located at 120 Maury O’Dell Place in Bond Park off High House Road in Cary.

“The draft we’ll be receiving comment on over the next month reflects many excellent suggestions we’ve received from our focus groups, which included recent annexees as well as Wake County citizens who own property that was under previous--but expired--resolutions of intent and consideration for annexation by the Town,” said Associate Planning Director Ricky Barker. “With their help, we’ve worked hard to create a program that’s clear, complete, and equitable.”

Part 1 of the draft program document establishes annexation policies and evaluation criteria to objectively identify which properties in Cary’s urban service area are appropriate to annex and why. Part 1 will give residents and property owners impacted by future annexation details on the implications of annexation, the costs and benefits, and what to expect in the process.

Once Part 1 is complete and adopted by the Cary Town Council, staff will begin work on Part 2 of the program, which will take the adopted policies and apply them to all properties in Cary’s service area to generate a map of properties that qualify for annexation. Part 2 will also suggest timeframes for annexation. Assuming Part 1 is finished this spring, Part 2 will likely be ready this summer or fall.

Those who cannot attend one of the two input sessions are invited to review Part 1 of the draft Annexation Program document at www.townofcary.org and e-mail comments to annex@townofcary.org. Or, contact the Planning Department at (919) 469-4082 to request a copy, ask questions, and/or provide feedback on the draft program. In order to be able to give comments ample consideration, feedback should submitted by April 22, 2005.
