Ok, this is for you folks that are thinking for running for office. Stop being so boring. Maybe y'all could learn a thing or two from the "Prirate Captain."

Students pick 'The Pirate'
An odd campaign at NCSU promotes the 'Captain.'

By DAVID BRACKEN, Staff Writer

To the delight of some and the horror of others, The Pirate Captain was elected N.C. State University student body president Wednesday in a landslide.

With 58.7 percent of the vote, The Captain, whose given name is Will Piavis, easily defeated Will Quick, president of the Student Senate, in a two-day runoff election. Nearly 26 percent of the student body voted in the runoff, just under the 27 percent that turned out in last week's election.

In a victory speech after the results were announced, The Pirate, a junior, seemed to offer an olive branch to those students who may not have supported his odd campaign, which garnered media attention far beyond the school's campus.

"We're going to get everyone involved in student government," he pledged in a speech that was relatively light on pirate-speak.

As for whether he would retain The Pirate persona as president, he said it has been a valuable tool in getting people's attention and he will continue to use it to accomplish his goals.

Few dispute that The Pirate rejuvenated interest in campus politics. A circuslike atmosphere surrounded the Wednesday announcement, with pirate supporters chanting their candidate's name while wearing pirate hats from the fast-food restaurant Long John Silver's. Quick supporters looked on in disbelief.

The Pirate's supporters point to high voter turnout as evidence that he will be good for the school.

"He's gotten students involved and as long as he can continue to do that, I think he'll be a good president," said fifth-year senior Scott Stephenson.

Others were disturbed by what they saw as a lack of substance in The Pirate's campaign.

"He doesn't really have any issues," said senior Alissa Tompkins, who voted for Quick. "All his quotes in the paper were in pirate language that doesn't make any sense."

Senior Curtis Hill said it was a sad day for NCSU. Hill, a political science major, said the election was a part of a trend in politics to value name recognition and appearance over substance.

But Hill also said the election results should be a wake-up call to NCSU student government.

"This is a message to the former student leaders that they didn't do their job," he said. "They were not an advocate for the students."

Wup-
In fairness, they probably should have pointed out that the sitting President of the Student Senate was recently implicated for voucher fraud. If I recall correctly, Mr. Quick (and his groupies) was stealing voucher tickets for big football and basketball games and funneling them to his pals.

I suppose that couldn't have had anything to do with the results of the election....

As far as "the pirate" not having any issues, well, he doesn't need them. The only issue they've had of consequence is to stop the out of control fee increases. A month or two ago the made a feeble attempt to rally against the new webassign fees, but apparently they didn't get too far (that's right folks, now they charge State students to do their homework!).

It doesn't matter what their issues are. They never accomplish anything anyway. And to be fair, they can't really. It's not like the University follows their recommendations anyway.

Someone needs to inform the Pirate that he needs to keep his email in a readily accessible file for public viewing.

My husband wrote for the NCSU newspaper (which, incidentally has a greater cirulation that the Cary News). They (the student senate) have their own set of "public records" rules, this in addition to the fact that they are a taxpayer supported public institution and are directly accountable to us anyway.

Maybe if the student body had been paying more attention (you know, asking to see copies of e-mails and other records of the sort, generally wasting people's time) they would have figured out that their Senate President was stealing game vouchers and their (and their parents') hard-earend money.

If I were you, I'd be a little annoyed that Gov. Easly wants to raise your taxes to give NCSU more money while the pilfer what you give them already. This isn't the first time mis-spent funding issues have come up (the public safety fiasco from 6 years ago comes to mind...).

If you think it's such a waste of time, why do even bother reading here? As best I can tell, you're directly benefiting from the information we spend time gathering.

I think we just found a replacement for Mayor Ernie in 2007:

Scalawag wins fans (http://www.carynews.com/news/story/2805004p-9248837c.html)

Since he is from Scottish Hills, hopefully he has attended the John Barbara School of Politics. Let's hope is stays in the area after graduation.
