PUBLIC COMMENT SOUGHT ON 2006-2012
DRAFT STATE TRANSPORTATION IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
Draft STIP Maintains NCDOT’s Focus on Safety, Mobility and
Expanding Transportation Options
RALEIGH –Transportation Secretary Lyndo Tippett is asking for public comment on the 2006-2012 Draft State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) through a series of public meetings scheduled across North Carolina. Citizens may also submit feedback to the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) via mail and email.
The STIP is NCDOT’s seven-year blueprint for transportation projects throughout the state. The 2006-2012 Draft STIP was unveiled during a Board of Transportation meeting last week, and includes 2,790 highway projects and more than 900 public transportation projects that uphold the department’s commitment to safety, mobility and expanding transportation options. The final 2006-2012 STIP will be presented to the Board for approval at their meeting on July 7, 2005, following the public comment period.
“The public comment period is the most important step in the STIP development process because it ensures that the department’s work reflects the transportation needs and priorities of North Carolina’s citizens,” said Transportation Secretary Lyndo Tippett. “I encourage all citizens to actively participate in this process and contact NCDOT with their comments.”
The public comment meetings will also give North Carolinians an opportunity to provide input for the 2007-2013 Draft STIP, which will be released late this fall. The STIP is typically updated every two years, but this time a one-year cycle is in place to move the STIP approval to even-numbered years.
Eight public meetings will be held across the state from May 10 through May 20. Dates and locations are attached.
The Draft STIP is also available online at www.ncdot.org/~tip. Email comments can be submitted from the Draft STIP site. Mail comments to: NCDOT TIP Development Unit, 1534 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1534.

I'm envisioning Lyndo sitting at his desk, wringing his hands, worrying if his plan will meet my priorities.
